Guide
Enjoy fireworks safely
This is general guidance. The instructions printed on each product always come first, and the distances and conditions they give are the ones to follow.
Before
- Read the instructions on every firework in daylight, before the evening.
- Check the space each firework needs and make sure you have it.
- Keep fireworks in a closed box and take them out one at a time.
- Have a torch, a bucket of water and something to light them at arm’s length.
- Keep pets indoors and let neighbours know.
During
- One adult should be in charge of lighting. Never light fireworks after drinking alcohol.
- Light each firework at arm’s length and stand well back.
- Never go back to a firework once it has been lit, even if it has not gone off.
- Never throw fireworks or put them in a pocket.
- Supervise children with sparklers, give them gloves, and put used sparklers hot end down in water.
After
- Leave used fireworks to cool, then soak them before putting them in the bin.
- Check the area again in daylight for anything left behind.
